The cobbled streets, pastel-colored buildings and the stately squares provide the colonial charm of Riobamba, the capital of the province Chimborazo. The city is also a good starting point for tours to the National Park Sangay, the Chimborazo volcano and the famous train ride to the “Nariz del Dibalo” (the Devil’s nose). But the city itself is also worth your while. A visit at the park Maldonado or the city’s catedral and Municipio where Ecuador’s first institution was signed is as well recommended as the museum ‘Monasteria de las Conceptas’.

Located in the Chimborazo province the small mountain town of Guamote is a perfect place to experience the traditional lifestyle of the Indígenas. People here still wear the traditional colorful clothing and follow ancient customs and beliefs. You should try to go there on a Thursday and see the colorful market. Unlike Otavalo, you won’t see here many tourists but more local people that doing shopping and socializing. From Guamote you can also start trips in the surroundings, enjoy the view in the volcanoes or do some outdoor activities like horseback riding or mountain biking.
